Concept Creation: Script interpretation - Brooklyn (2015) Interior location: Irish dining room in the 1950s
Extensive research into life in Ireland during the 1950s as well as domestic objects, decor and design elements from the 1930s, 40s and 50s was carried out. This research informed the creation and development of the design. The walls, base, window and furniture were created in 3D rendering software (Vectorworks) and laser cut. All 2D textures (wallpaper and carpet) were created in Vectorworks. Hand modelled with card: Sacred Heart, curtain box, books, fireplace, mirror, paintings Hand modelled (fabric and folded paper): curtains
Scale: 1:10
A mini electric grinder was used to add scuffs and nicks to the furniture. Afterwards, they were painted with wood stain.

• I used rotating, coloured lights to enhance underwater effect and to add to the garish nature of the room. • I placed printed concept art outside the windows along with a red light – to add to the effect of the red sky. • Laser cut structure and furniture - Vectorworks • I created the sea cave walls and floor using modelling clay and tools. I then painted them in purple tones. • I made the cushioning and mattress using fabric and foam. • I used hot glue and a screwdriver to make the barnacle structures, after which I painted them. • I created the water using hot glue and paint. • I made the curtains using velour, wooden sticks and glue. • I created the bed clothes, mattress and sofa cushion using foam and fabric. The fabric bottom of the bed was created using the same method as that used for the curtains – I glued wooden sticks to fabric and carefully folded the fabric back and forth in between the sticks to create the folds. • Silicone tentacles created using a mould and painted • Plaster frames – painted and glued to the walls • 3D printed miniature jellyfish • Aquarium plants – painted • Plastic jellyfish heads - hung from the ceiling and attached to furniture
Motorised jellyfish heads – bed and sofa: This is a really simple Arduino and servo motor set-up. I laser cut holes in the bed base and the seat of the sofa. I then fixed the servo motors to the bottoms of both the bed frame and sofa seat and attached rods to the servo heads. These rods extend upwards and attach to Styrofoam balls which I painted and glued to the jellyfish heads. I used simple code to make the motors move back and forth. This is to roughly illustrate the pulsing motion of the jellyfish that protrude from much of the furniture.
